Conspiracy Theories of the 1930s

Two related conspiracy framings are commonly applied to "antifa" — a recent rhetorical "cult of antifa" framing, and the older claim that antifa is a centrally coordinated terror organisation. Both fit poorly with the documented reality of decentralised local antifascist affinity groups, no central leadership, no unified funding source, and no formal membership. Local affinity groups (Rose City Antifa, NYC Anti-Fascist Action) and specific protest violence are documented in court records; the larger "central cabal" and "high-control cult" claims are not. FBI Director Christopher Wray testified in September 2020 that antifa is "an ideology, not an organisation."

On the night of February 27, 1933, the German parliament building burned. Dutch communist Marinus van der Lubbe was arrested at the scene, convicted, and executed. Hitler's government used the fire within twenty-four hours to push through the Reichstag Fire Decree, suspending civil liberties and enabling mass arrests of Communist Party members. Historians have debated for ninety years whether van der Lubbe acted alone or whether the Nazis orchestrated or facilitated the fire. The majority modern view — supported by Fritz Tobias (1962), revived by Benjamin Carter Hett (2014), and confirmed by a 2008 German Federal Court reversal of van der Lubbe's conviction — is that the evidence for Nazi orchestration remains contested but the exploitation of the fire by Hitler is thoroughly documented.

A set of clay jars with copper cylinders and iron rods, found near Baghdad and dated to the Parthian or Sasanian era, are claimed by alternative-history writers to be ancient electric batteries — proof of a lost electrical technology used for electroplating, or even a gift from ancient astronauts. The jars are genuinely old and a jar-plus-two-metals arrangement really can produce a fraction of a volt, and replicas (including a famous MythBusters build) have generated current. But there are no wires, no connectors, no electroplated artifacts, and no textual record of electricity in antiquity. The mainstream archaeological reading — storage vessels for sacred scrolls or protective spells — fits the evidence far better.

On 31 August 1939, SS Sturmbannführer Alfred Naujocks led a staged false-flag attack on the German radio station at Gleiwitz (now Gliwice, Poland). Concentration camp prisoners and local Silesian activist Franciszek Honiok were dressed in Polish uniforms and killed at the scene — the so-called "Konserve" (canned goods) operation. Combined with simultaneous attacks on Hochlinden customs post and the Pitschen forest service station, it formed the pretext for Germany's invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939. Naujocks's 1945 affidavit to the Nuremberg Military Tribunal (PS-2751) is the sole surviving direct testimony. Verdict: confirmed.
