20 theories in our archive first emerged between 1950 and 1959.

The 1953 CIA Coup Against Mossadegh (Operation Ajax)
In August 1953, the CIA (Operation Ajax) and British MI6 (Operation Boot) orchestrated the overthrow of Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and restored Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to full power. The CIA acknowledged its role in a 2013 declassified internal history. The coup followed Mossadegh's nationalisation of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) and is widely regarded as a foundational event in modern Iranian-US relations, contributing to the conditions that produced the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Guatemala 1954 / Operation PBSUCCESS / Árbenz overthrow
In June 1954 a CIA-organised and Eisenhower-approved paramilitary force under Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas invaded Guatemala and overthrew President Jacobo Árbenz, whose land reform Decree 900 had expropriated idle United Fruit Company holdings for redistribution to landless peasants. The CIA's role was acknowledged and extensively documented in a 1997 declassification release. The coup ended Guatemala's democratic decade and initiated a military dictatorship; the subsequent civil war (1960–1996) killed approximately 200,000 people.

Adrenochrome Harvesting
A claim, amplified heavily by QAnon from 2017 onward, that global elites harvest a compound called adrenochrome from the blood of frightened children and consume it as a psychoactive drug or life-extension substance. Adrenochrome is a real, commercially available compound (oxidised adrenaline) with no credible evidence of psychoactive properties or significant physiological effect at any plausible dose. The claim recycles antisemitic blood-libel tropes with a modern pseudo-scientific veneer.

Lavon Affair: Israeli false-flag bombings in Egypt (1954)
The Lavon Affair (also called Operation Susannah) was a failed Israeli covert operation in 1954 in which Egyptian-Jewish agents recruited by Israeli military intelligence carried out a series of bombings against British and American targets in Cairo and Alexandria. The operation was designed to be attributed to the Muslim Brotherhood or Egyptian communists, with the aim of destabilising the relationship between Egypt and the Western powers and discrediting the Nasser government. The network was exposed by Egyptian security services; Israeli defence minister Pinhas Lavon resigned over the affair in 1955. Israel officially acknowledged the operation in 2005.

Polio vaccine SV40 contamination (1955-63)
Simian Virus 40 (SV40) was discovered in 1960 in rhesus monkey kidney cells used to produce both the Salk inactivated polio vaccine and early Sabin oral polio vaccine. An estimated 10-30 million Americans and up to 100 million people globally received SV40-contaminated polio vaccines between 1955 and 1963. NIH virologist Bernice Eddy detected the contamination in 1960 but stockpiles continued to be used. SV40 causes sarcomas in hamsters and was subsequently detected in human tumours. The IOM 2002 review concluded the biological mechanism was plausible but epidemiologic data were inconclusive. Contamination is documented fact; cancer causation in humans remains contested.

Suez Crisis Protocol of Sèvres (Oct 22-24 1956)
The Protocol of Sèvres was a secret tripartite agreement signed at a villa outside Paris on 22-24 October 1956 between the United Kingdom, France, and Israel. Under its terms, Israel would invade Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on 29 October 1956; Britain and France would then issue a staged "peacekeeping ultimatum" to both parties; when Egypt rejected it, Anglo-French forces would intervene to "protect" the Suez Canal. British Prime Minister Anthony Eden subsequently destroyed the UK copy of the document. The Israeli copy was declassified in 1996 and published by historian Avi Shlaim. The collusion is now confirmed historical record.

FBI Gambino wiretap of Paul Castellano + Apalachin precedent (1980s)
In 1983 the FBI planted a listening device in the White House mansion of Gambino family boss Paul Castellano on Staten Island, producing extensive recordings used in the 1985-87 Mafia Commission Trial. The operation was preceded by the 1957 Apalachin meeting — a multi-state Mob summit in upstate New York that, when discovered by New York State Police, first established the existence of a national criminal organisation to public and law-enforcement consciousness. Both events are documented in court records and FBI files and are confirmed historical facts.

Moon Landing Van Allen Belts: Apollo Astronauts Couldn't Survive the Radiation
A common sub-theory of the Moon Landing Hoax claim holds that the Van Allen radiation belts surrounding Earth make a crewed lunar mission impossible — that astronauts would have received a lethal radiation dose before even reaching the Moon. The scientific record contradicts this. NASA engineered the Apollo trajectory to minimise belt exposure, reducing transit time to roughly one hour each way through the most intense zones. Total measured doses across the missions were well within established safe limits. The physicist who discovered the belts, James Van Allen, explicitly endorsed the Apollo missions and rejected the radiation-impossibility claim.

Dyatlov Pass Incident
In February 1959, nine experienced Soviet hikers died under strange circumstances on a slope of the northern Ural mountains — their tent slashed open from inside, several bodies bearing severe internal injuries without external wounds, and faint radiation on some clothing. The unexplained deaths and Soviet secrecy spawned decades of theories ranging from secret weapons tests to yetis and UFOs, until modern investigations and a 2021 peer-reviewed study pointed to a rare delayed slab avalanche.

Lee Harvey Oswald's Soviet Defection and the KGB-Asset Claim
Lee Harvey Oswald defected to the Soviet Union in September 1959, married Soviet citizen Marina Prusakova, and returned to the United States in June 1962. His documented contacts with Soviet and Cuban officials — including a visit to the Soviet embassy in Mexico City weeks before the assassination — have fuelled claims that Oswald was a KGB asset and that the Soviet Union ordered the assassination of President Kennedy. Declassified CIA, FBI, and post-Soviet KGB records confirm Oswald's presence in the USSR and his Soviet contacts; they do not support the "Soviet-ordered hit" conclusion, which remains unsubstantiated.

Yellowstone Supervolcano Cover-Up
Claims that the US government or USGS is concealing evidence of an imminent Yellowstone supervolcano eruption that would devastate North America, or that seismic and geothermal data are being misrepresented to prevent public panic. The USGS Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) publishes its monitoring data in real time. The current probability of a large-scale Yellowstone eruption in any given year is approximately 1 in 730,000.
